OSM Kenya participates in World Clean Up Day 2025

Every year, World Cleanup Day brings together millions of people around the globe with one mission: to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable planet. In 2025, OSM Kenya proudly joined this global movement by organizing a cleanup activity in Kibera, Nairobi.

OSM Kenya volunteers, together with community members and local partners, Kibera Eco Care collected litter and plastic from identified hotspots in Kibera and sorted the waste for recycling and proper disposal. Additionally, we mapped cleanup points to support future waste management initiatives and inform local planners.

Mapping healthcare in Kenya

Using Open Mapping to Enhance Healthcare Accessibility

In 2020, OSM Kenya and YouthMappers Kenya received a microgrant to map health facilities in Nairobi and the surrounding counties. This was administered through a community mentorship program where a cohort of 30 was trained on all aspects of OSM. We then worked to map and enrich existing healthcare data on OpenStreetMap by leveraging open data sources from the Ministry of Health and survey data from GlaxoSmithKline(2019). Youth Mappers Kenya and OSM Kenya led the project, with Map Kibera serving as the fiscal host.

State of the Map 2024

Hosting the global open mapping community

In 2024, OSM Kenya hosted the global State of the Map conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The conference brought together OSM enthusiasts, researchers, innovators, learners, and contributors from 54 countries.

Satellite Imagery for Social Good

Using AI in mapping Nakuru, Kisumu, and Turkana counties in Kenya.

In 2022, OSM Kenya members supported the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and Microsoft to enhance mapping in key Kenyan counties: Nakuru, Turkana, and Kisumu. During the project period, OSM Kenya members combined AI-generated data with human verification, resulting in 1.4 million mapped and validated building footprints and 19,131 km of mapped roads.

The project’s impact extended beyond data collection. Working directly with the Nakuru City Board, HOTOSM applied these mapping resources to identify flood-prone areas and support evidence-based city planning. To ensure sustainability, the project included training programs for 20 OSM members and six county and city planning officials in AI-assisted mapping.

Photomapping for Sustainable Mobility

Enhancing Maps Through Street Level Imagery

In March and April 2025, OSM Kenya members supported the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team – Open Mapping Hub Eastern and Southern Africa on an innovative project: Photomapping for Sustainable Mobility using Street-Level Imagery (SLI) in Nakuru, Kenya.

This project aimed to improve the detail, accuracy, and usability of OpenStreetMap (OSM) data by leveraging the power of street-level imagery and AI-assisted mapping tools. By leveraging high-resolution imagery captured along Nakuru’s streets, the team transformed photos into valuable geospatial data that directly supports sustainable mobility initiatives.

IDEAMAPS City-wide Model Validation

Assessing the Reliability and Performance of the APHRC Model

OSM Kenya participated in the testing and validation of the APHRC model, aimed at assessing its accuracy, reliability, and applicability in addressing the intended research objectives. The process involved evaluating the model’s assumptions, testing its predictive performance on real-world data, and ensuring that its outputs align with observed patterns. Validation was conducted through comparison with benchmark datasets, stakeholder feedback, and scenario analysis to determine the model’s robustness. The findings confirmed that the model meets the required standards for credibility and usability, providing a strong foundation for evidence-based decision-making and future applications.
