About OSM

World's Largest Open Geodatabase

OpenStreetMap is the world’s leading collaborative mapping platform, where millions of volunteers create and share free geographic data. Anyone can contribute, edit, and use OSM data for navigation, planning, research, and innovation.

As OSM Kenya, we’re the local community driving this mission forward in Kenya. We organize mapping events, train new mappers, collaborate with organizations, and ensure that Kenyan communities are represented on the world’s free map. From rural villages to urban centers, we’re building the most detailed, accessible map of Kenya—together.

Our Story

Building the OpenStreetMap Community in Kenya

  • The Beginning

    August 2018

    The Beginning

OSM Kenya was formally created by our founding members in Tanzania while attending the FOSS4G 2018 conference. During one of the conference days, the team met and discussed the goals of the community and the creation process.

    October 2018

    First Mapathon

We hosted our first mapathon a few months later! This premier event was part of the global Map2EndFGM campaign. We brought together mappers and activists to learn more about supporting their work and mapped Kuria in Kenya

  • First Project

    August 2020

    First Community Project

In 2020, OSM Kenya received a project microgrant from HOTOSM and Meta! We facilitated the training of 30 female mappers over 5 months while mapping healthcare facilities in Nairobi
